Arbitrary Unit 1 consists of the probability sampling stratum that "wraps" around the north, east, and west sides of the site, more-or-less following the site-enclosing wall (see Database Map 4002). It also follows, for a short distance, the contour of the cliff in the southeast extension to the site, encompassing the northern edge of Block 1400. Ten randomly selected 2-x-2-m units were excavated within Arbitrary Unit 1.

There are only two areas with clear evidence of interpretable cultural activity within this arbitrary unit. One is secondary refuse in unit 971N 1092E. The location of this refuse suggests that it is associated with Block 1000. This modest quantity of refuse appears to be domestic in origin and might have been deposited in this location, or might have been originally deposited upslope and eroded into this location. The other evidence of cultural activity consists of seven burned spots on a series of ephemeral use surfaces just outside the site-enclosing wall in Block 100. These spots indicate the repeated need for light, heat, or cooking facilities (or any combination of these) in this location. These features are evidence of cultural activities that were not only outside the confines of structures and courtyards, but also outside the site-enclosing wall. The location of these burned spots near one of the D-shaped towers might also be significant.
