It is inferred that this structure was dry-laid, contained no prepared surface or features, and was unroofed; the structure use is unknown. Members of the Native American Advisory Team interpreted structures like Structure 409 as a shrine.

Based on data collected from other shrines at Shields Pueblo, Structure 409 was most likely abandoned immediately prior to regional abandonment (late Pueblo III period).
