ABOUT THIS STRUCTURE
General Location
Block 1200, southeast quadrant of site, on cliff edge.
Specific Location
Northeast corner room adjacent to Structure 1206 (kiva); occupies the space between the northeast wall of the kiva, the site-enclosing wall to the east, and the south wall of Structure 1205 to the north. Below Nonstructure 1218.
Interpretive Type
Storage room.
Structure Use
Few data on which to base an interpretation of use. This corner room was accessed by a tunnel through the northeast upper lining wall of Structure 1206 (kiva); the floor of the north end of the tunnel contains an intact hatchway in the (largely intact) roof of Structure 1219. This hatchway was at the level of the bench surface in the kiva. No artifacts were documented as being in contact with the (bedrock) floor; however, several artifacts that were probably culturally deposited were found in sediment that rested on the floor and that appeared to have been naturally deposited. These artifacts include three complete projectile points, one complete and one incomplete bone awl, a coprolite, a human vertebra, and more than 100 nonhuman bones from a variety of species including deer and turkey. Whether these artifacts reflect use of the room, or were deposited there after the original use of the room ended is not known. Indirect indicators of structure use include the small size of the room and the low roof, which was only 1 m above the (bedrock) floor. These characteristics suggest that the room was suitable only for storage.

Dating

Abandonment
Abandonment appears to have been leisurely, as no artifacts were left on the floor. This corner room was probably abandoned at the same time and in the same manner as the adjacent kiva (Structure 1206).
Postabandonment
A stratum of sediment appears to have been deposited naturally on the floor; artifacts were culturally deposited in this sediment. Some burned roofing material, presumably from the adjacent kiva (Structure 1206) was deposited into the room. Additional roofing material, some burned and some unburned, was then deposited into the room (from the kiva roof and from the roof of Structure 1219?). Beneath the remaining roof (which was slumped but not collapsed), the upper portion of the room was left with no fill.
