ABOUT THIS STRUCTURE
General Location Block 1200, southeast quadrant of site, on cliff edge.
Specific Location Southwest corner room adjacent to Structure 1206 (kiva); occupies the space between the southwest wall of the kiva and the walls of the two adjacent surface rooms, Structures 1202 and 1207. Below Arbitrary Unit 1213.
Interpretive Type Storage room.
Structure Use As with Structure 1219, the roof of this corner room was nearly intact and featured a well-preserved hatchway in its northwest corner. Access to this hatchway was by tunnel from the kiva (Structure 1206) main chamber. There were no floor features in this corner room. A few artifacts were found on or near the floor, including a complete peckingstone and stone disk, one complete mano and two incomplete manos, and the bottom of a bowl. Two wall niches (Features 32 and 33) were present in the east wall of this room, but the use of these features is not known. Four roof-support beam sockets were documented--two in the north wall, and two in the south wall. The bedrock floor of the room was below the level of the kiva floor (Structure 1206), and the roof was at the level of the bench surface in that kiva. With the data at hand it is estimated that the roof was 110-120 cm above the floor; thus, the room was larger vertically than the other two corner rooms associated with Structure 1206, but it was still far from tall enough to allow an adult to stand. The small size and low roof of this room lead to the inference that the room was used for storage.
Dating
Abandonment Abandonment was leisurely during continued occupation of the kiva suite.
Postabandonment Although the roof remained largely intact, some material from the roof collapsed into the room over time. Some construction material and refuse appeared to have been intentionally deposited through the hatchway, and alluvial and aeolian sediments also came to rest inside the structure. After the abandonment of the village, collapsed wall debris and additional naturally deposited sediment was deposited on top of the structure roof.
