ABOUT THIS STRUCTURE
General Location Block 300, west of spring; borders east-northeast end of plaza.
Specific Location Southwest corner room off of Structure 306 (kiva); located in the small, triangular space between the kiva and the kiva-enclosing wall. Overlies Nonstructure 314.
Interpretive Type Not assigned.
Structure Use It is not clear what this space was or how it was used. It was formed by a low, curved kiva lower lining wall that enclosed the southwest corner of the rectangular structure into which the kiva (Structure 306) was built. The curved wall was partly collapsed or dismantled, and its original height is not known. A layer of stones in the fill that was well above the bedrock surface could have been the original or a remodeled floor; it is not clear whether bedrock was ever used as a floor. It is also not clear whether, during the occupation of the kiva, this area was intentionally filled to the top of the lower lining wall, forming a bench surface (in which case, it would be considered a feature rather than an actual structure); no such bench surface was recorded in the field, however. The existing documentation suggests that storage is the best inference for the use of this space.
Dating
Abandonment Abandoned in the same leisurely manner as the associated kiva (Structure 306).
Postabandonment Possibly subject to some of the same types of dismantling as occurred in the associated kiva (Stucture 306), such as robbing of stones or intentional collapsing of the kiva roof during salvaging of beams. This structure was then buried by the natural collapse of the upper walls of the kiva and naturally deposited sediment.
