General Location Near the southwest end of the pueblo in Architectural Block 800; part of the great kiva complex.
Specific Location Adjacent to, and east of, Structure 800, a great kiva.
Selection Criteria Selected to investigate the great kiva complex.Testing initiated because of the possible presence of a great kiva room in this location. Midden was encountered instead of a room.
Use Secondary refuse that, on the basis of the proximity of the trash to the great kiva, is believed to have originated from that structure. The refuse contained a wide diversity of artifacts, including discarded tools. Tools recovered include bone tools, cores, ground-stone tools, informal and formal chipped-stone tools, and peckingstones. Other artifacts such as beads, polished stones, unshaped and shaped minerals, corn, and charcoal were present in smaller quantities. A surprisingly large proportion of the animal bones from this midden were from large birds--predominantly turkey, but other large birds were also represented. The number of bones from large birds in this deposit is inferred to reflect specific activities that occurred in the great kiva. Additional studies that will include intrasite comparisons of artifact assemblages may lead to additional inferences about the activities that occurred in the great kiva.
Abandonment This midden was probably abandoned as part of the abandonment of the great kiva.
Postabandonment Processes Midden covered by wind- and water-deposited sediment and wall fall from the great kiva.
Dating of Midden The location of this refuse adjacent to the exterior face of the great kiva leads to the inference that the refuse was deposited during the use of that structure, which appears to have been sometime between A.D. 1245 and 1280.
Date Range 1 (A.D. 1250–1280)
