Joe Sindelar

Mesa Verde National Park

Joe Sindelar is a lifelong educator with a career in elementary/middle school teaching that spanned four decades.  During the summers of 1979 and 1980, he was a seasonal interpretive ranger and became “hooked” on the place and the story of the ancient people of Mesa Verde.  After retiring from teaching, Joe returned to the park as a seasonal interp for seven of the last ten years.  During this time, he researched the life and accomplishments of Jesse Nusbaum, the superintendent who “saved” and guided the park through the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s.  He then created a living history presentation as Jesse Nusbaum that he used on tours of Cliff Palace, the historic district, and presented entertaining campfire programs at the Morefield campground.  Currently, Joe is a volunteer guide for school groups at History Colorado Center in Denver, specializing in the Mesa Verde exhibits.
